Repayments are 9% (undergraduate) or 6% (postgraduate) of earnings above the threshold, calculated per pay period. If you hold more than one undergraduate plan, SLC applies the lowest combined threshold. Balances are written off after 25–40 years depending on the plan.
How student loan repayments work
Repayments are deducted by your employer once your monthly earnings exceed your plan's threshold. You repay 9% of earnings above the threshold on undergraduate plans and 6% on the postgraduate loan. Repayments are calculated per pay period.
Balances are written off after 25 years (Plan 1), 30 years (Plan 2, Plan 4 and the postgraduate loan) or 40 years (Plan 5). Interest rates are linked to the Retail Price Index and your income, so your balance can grow even while you are repaying.
